Writing 3 Class Notes -- Week 6 (October 3)

Greetings!

Can you believe that it is October already.  I had a beautiful drive to school this week, seeing the dried stalks of corn and some pumpkin patches.  I don't know about you, but I love Fall.

After praying for our class, we played a short word game.  Our family has a favorite game, Man Bites Dog, in which the players are dealt cards with nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and a few prepositions.  The object of the game is to come up with a newspaper headline and to get the highest score by adding up the numbers on the cards. We played one round, and they requested a second one.

After our short game, I divided the class into pairs to discuss their paper topics and thesis ideas with  one another.  Using a worksheet with specific questions to ask each other, they talked about interest, controlling ideas, and source options.  After 10 minutes, they split and were paired with another partner to discuss their topics again.  I really enjoyed hearing them talk with excited energy about their research.

Following this discussion, we looked at the syllabus.  I've decided to adjust it and to give them another week to write the rough draft.  Below is the revised syllabus:

Week 6 -- Detailed Outline due
Week 7 -- Draft of Introduction & Conclusion due
Week 8 -- Rough Draft #1 due
Week 9 -- Peer Edit due
Week 10 -- Works Cited draft #1 due
Week 11 -- Rough Draft #2 due
Week 12 -- Works Cited draft #2 due
Week 13 -- Rough Draft #3 (optional)
Week 14 -- Final Drafts due

Drafts of the introduction and conclusion are due next week.  If other portions of the paper are finished at that time, they can be handed in.  If students have any questions or would like portions of their outlines or drafts read, they can e-mail them into me.

Next week we will discuss plaigarism and MLA citation guidelines.

Listening to them talk about their papers and all of their ideas has gotten me excited about their papers!

Assignments for Next Week:
-- Detailed Outline (if it wasn't handed in this week)
-- Drafts of the Introduction & Conclusion
