We had great conversations in class today, therefore our class was very productive.
We began the class discussing ACT and SAT test prompts. I divided the class in half and had each group work on one of the questions. Then, they groups presented their ideas for the questions to the rest of us. We discussed whether technology makes our lives easier and better; the other question queried whether students should be required to be involved in community volunteering.
Following this discussion, I asked the students to share with the rest of the class some of their thoughts about working on their research papers. I asked them to comment on what they enjoyed, what they found challenging or easy, what they would like to have done differently, etc. It was interesting to hear how some love the researching while others really like the writing.
They handed in 2 copies of their rough drafts today; one is for me, and one is for a classmate for a peer edit. They have 2 rubrics to use to evaluate those rough drafts. I will go over the rough drafts with an eye towards organization and content. I doubt that I will be able to completely reign in my correcting red pen with regards to mechanics -- but that's not the aim of this first rough draft.
The peer edit partners are as follows:
-- Christi and Ben will read each other's papers
-- Sam will read Kirsten's paper
-- Kirsten will read Josh's paper
-- Josh will read Brit's paper
-- Harry and David will read each other's papers. (They will e-mail their papers to one another)
Assignments for Next Week
-- Continue any more research needed for your paper.
-- Complete the Peer Edit for for your classmate
-- Put together a first draft of the Works Cited page.
